Background

This cruel goddess believes that the proper way for mortals is to bow down to the gods in all things. She and the god Ermeeth were pupils of the goddess Tielekku, but although they grew in power together under the tutelage of Tielekku, Ermeeth became her bitter enemy when he taught his people (who would later be known as the Oranbegans) how to cast magic, causing them to stop worshiping the gods. Both Tielekku and Hequat deemed this intolerable and therefore Hequat rallied her followers and forced the Oranbegans from their lands.

Ermeeth's followers fled and formed a new city in faraway lands, but Hequat infiltrated it and stirred the populace until she caused a rebellion, ultimately starting a civil war. When her faction lost the war, she raised an island from the bottom of the sea to form a new nation for her now land-less people, but this initiated a war with the Coralax, a species that had already laid claim to the island. The Coralax summoned a huge Leviathan to their aid and it was only through Hequat's direct intervention that the Mu defeated the beast. It is not known exactly how this affected her relations with the Coralax goddess, Merulina.

After the fall of the Leviathan, she instructed her new nation, the Mu, to hate the Oranbegans and to fight against them for generations to come. Mu citizens believed that their station in life was to serve as the righteous implements of her will, and in their deeds and customs they enshrined this ideology so fiercely that to do otherwise would be unthinkable. At her command they performed generations of what would now be called eugenic breeding in order to strengthen the magical power within their blood lines to unimaginable levels. Hequat also commanded that they crush all contrary thought, and make no art that did not praise her name. By this time, all Mu men, women, and children were sorcerers and sorceresses.

Once she thought her nation was prepared, Hequat attacked Oranbega once more, but despite their initial successes, the Mu suffered a crushing defeat when the Oranbegans, in their desperation, made a pact with the powers of the Netherworld. Only a handful of Mu refugees survived the war.

There is no more mention of Hequat until 20th century, when a fundamentalistic faction among the Mu Mystics of Arachnos who, longing for the return of their goddess and like their ancestors of old, served her above even Arachnos, Scirocco, and Lord Recluse, tried to contact her. No one knows what would occur if the goddess were to return to the modern world, but since all gods depend on worship to thrive, she is likely in a highly weakened state, given the small number of Mu zealots maintaining her cult. That could, however, always change.
