Overview
A Boss is an enemy rank that is stronger than a Lieutenant but weaker than an Elite Boss.
An equal level Boss will con +2 to the player's level, and has higher levels of protection against status effects. For example, it will normally take two applications of a hold power to hold a Boss (disregarding Dominators' Domination Inherent and Controllers' Overpower ability). Their name will appear in orange to players of an equal level.
Sometimes, an Archvillain or Hero may appear in a mission as their defined Enemy Rank, but in actuality, has Boss-class health and their powers scaled down to the strength of that class rather than as an Archvillain or Hero. The reason for this is unknown, though it may be a possibility to preserve balancing issues. Examples include Imperious from the Imperious Task Force, and Ghost Widow from Sister Airlia's missions. Please see Archvillain and Hero for more details as well as an incomplete listing of NPCs who fall under this behaviour.
