Archived News

I appoligize if I step on anyone's toes by updating the news section. It bothers me when months go by and no news is on the main page that everyone visits. BTW, Who's in charge of archiving news items? --Konoko 18:00, 17 January 2007 (PST)

No worries at all! In fact, I'm really glad when folks add stuff, because I don't always get around to it like I should. I guess no one's really "in charge" per se, but only wiki admins (you included) have access to move stuff like that around. I usually just keep four or five items on the front page and archive whatever makes it look okay again. By all means, add and/or archive away! --TonyV 18:14, 17 January 2007 (PST)

Protection

Heya! Regarding the protection of the Main Page - is it really needed? Unless you're seeing a lot of vandalism, there's little reason to protect it. You could restrict it to just registered users, which would mean it could be updated more rapidly and less admin work. Btw, w:c:starter has a new design, if you're interested. Kirkburn (talk) 21:13, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

o,o its less about vandalization, and more about keeping ppl from crowing about this new cof related site, or the newest forum dev who showed up.. basically, its to limit the amount of semi on topic news that shows up. If you feel that you would have accurate, important news stories, you can petition to have editing rights to it, but I have no idea if you'd get them. Often the easiest way to get a story added to the main page, is to type your article here, or in the forums, and an admin can look it over to make sure its fully relevant to Paragon Wiki. --Sleepy Kitty 10:33, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Okay, that's fair :) Kirkburn (talk) 13:01, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

This sparked a discussion among some of the admins. The original reason it was protected was spam concerns, which should no longer be as much of a problem. So we're going to unprotect it for a while and see how it goes. Thanks for the nudge, Kirkburn! -- Sekoia 21:18, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Optimizing the usage of DPL

Hi folks, I'm PanSola, a Wikia Helper. I am dropping by to chat about DPL (Dynamic Page List) usage practices. This site is among one of the most popular Wikia wikis that use a large number of DPL calls, and as DPL queries can sometimes pose quit a load on the servers, being careful with the usage of DPL can help improve the general user experience at Wikia.

One of the most simple ways to reduce the demand of DPL on the servers is to enable caching of the results. The more often a page with DPL calls get viewed, the greater the effect caching has. And so on a popular wiki such as this one, enabling caching is likely to help reduce the server load quite a bit.

Unfortunately there is a downside: caching means the results won't immediately update when information on the wiki changes. Sometimes the information can be out of sync by several hours. If you are worried about technical accuracy, you can place a note warning the visitors "new changes may not be updated immediately". For mission-critical usages of DPL that are time-sensitive such that any delay is unacceptable, enabling caching wouldn't be a good idea.

I'll drop by again later with more tips on how to improve server performance via optimizing DPL usage. If you have any questions, concerns, or think it's a good idea but need help implementing the change, feel free to discuss here. If you need a fast response from me, please ping me on my talk page (but still keep the main discussion here, so everything is in one place). Thanks. (you can also check out more tips here). -User:PanSola(talk/history) 21:25, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip! I'll try to start incorporating that into our less time-sensitive pages. :D -- Sekoia 00:15, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Is there any way to query to see which pages are using DPL or which pages have a higher CPU load? -- Sekoia 18:44, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
I don't have a direct way to check. I'll ask around to see if it's possible to get the data. -User:PanSola(talk/history) 17:37, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Spring Fling

Section needs to be altered to say 2010, even if there's no new stuff. :3 Sera404 18:57, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Good catch. Should be all fixed up now. --Eabrace Healthbar notify phone.png 19:43, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Navigation

For new users of the site and new players of the game, the navigation here is not optimized in any way. Even though I'm very familiar with Wikis, it took me forever to get any idea of how to navigate the site, and the side menu isn't that helpful. Would anyone be against a possible collaborative effort to get to a more navigational-based and new-user-friendly main page, such as seen on numerous other gaming wikis (i.e. WoWWiki, etc.)? User:Hooper/sig2 20:07, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

That's primarily the intent of the Table of Contents. Is that not helpful? --Eabrace Healthbar notify phone.png 02:08, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
It is one of the most helpful of the pages, but it is still very lacking. Linking to categories is a basic way to navigate, but coming up with a Tier-based system would be much more easy for both new-to-the-site and new-to-the-game. At my work we use the term "least-sophisticated person" for dealing with idiots, and we basically make sure all of our procedures are made so that that kind of person would easily understand it. Its a sadly-frank-yet-good approach for websites to.
My thoughts would be to have the main page have only one section devoted to news, and then have one-click links to portals for missions, lore, locations, npcs, etc. Many other MMOs use this type on their sites, so it would be easy for those of a shared-demographic to understand. Also, for those not sure what the "Ouroboros Portal" is, it isn't immediately clear and understandable. Basically, just making things easier for newcomers. Of course, it'd be a massive makeover that would require extremely more in-depth knowledge of the game than my mere 20ish levels would allow. User:Hooper/sig2 02:13, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
Edit: Actually, give me a few weeks and I'll make a userpage example of some possible redesigns as a start, and then we can have some community input if anyone else agrees. If not then I'm just the weird one. User:Hooper/sig2 02:25, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Older Pages need updating.

I've noticed that a lot of older pages seem to not have up to date info on them, and there was even a lack of a link between President Marchand (leader of the CoV resistance faction) and his Praetorian counterpart, Provost Marchand (a high-ranking GR loyalist). Also I believe Ingame References and Easter Egg may also be outdated. I also noticed some of the newer pages are lacking in easy-to-find info. Dr. Graves has complete info and yet Twinshot does not? Feel free to update anything you find to be out of date. It's a group effort! ~ User:Aggelakis/Sig1 02:26, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Matt, you have discovered the point of a Wiki! If you find a problem... you can fix it!  :) —Thirty7 Talk-Icon.jpg 05:37, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
I should point out that I have fixed as much as I could. I'm just a bit disappointed by the sheer lack of info...Mattwo 12:04, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Redesign

I just started a discussion about a mild redesign of the Main Page on the forums: http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,4505.0.html -- Sekoia 03:50, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

I took a look at the page in your "Sandbox", and I for one really like it! —Thirty7 Talk-Icon.jpg 05:00, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Alerts

At TonyV's request, I'm making some changes to the main page to draw attention to the recent SaveCoH efforts. He wanted us to highlight the alerts in red or light red, but as I'm colorblind... who knows if I picked sane colors. :) If anyone who isn't color challenged wants to help, you can modify my choices for the style= option for {{MP Heading}} and {{Newsdate}}. -- Sekoia 14:01, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Discussion thread for the changes made is here: http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,4941.0.html -- Sekoia 14:31, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

NEW: http://massivelyop.com/2017/03/21/master-x-master-announces-a-closed-beta-date-and-adds-city-of-heroes-statesman-to-its-roster/ message received.

OK folks time for a Joshex opinion for those who want to read it; Nate and crew and NCSoft conspired together against external forces who want to stop CoX anything from happening(there are such people out there..) and have gotten to a point in the deal where they need to send us a message about whats going on without tipping off the powerful people who hate CoX and want it to stay dead. There's a lot to look at here, first of all, the statesman model, looks like they are hands deep into CoX source code, if they were not already hands deep in it digging out something like this and rigging it for a new game engine would be far too much trouble, where as if their hands are already into the CoX code, it makes it justifiable. The sign, "come in we're open" has anyone actually tried connecting with the CoX client to the default NCSoft server? (actually it may be at a different IP address by now, wait... there's a hidden mark on the bottom right corner of the sign that was edited in to the picture, it appears to read D or II, II would mean CoH 2, D.. ? D-day? there may be some tinier text written underneath it but as far as I can tell it's illegible, seems off to add in an extra symbol there unless it serves a purpose, besides the fact that there are signs of editing and that is one of them (there is a red line extending from the side of the gray mailbox thing to the edge of that sign which means an alpha transparent layer was added on there after the initial image was made.

anyways it seems to me that the message here is that significant progress has been made but the NDA is still on because whatever it stipulates must happen before the NDA expires has not happened yet. And the "come on in we're open" might mean they want us to try to log-in or find the server, or, I don't know could mean a bunch of things. thoughts? Joshex (talk) 22:26, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Sidebar Update?

Not sure where else to put this discussion, but the "Splasher" utility site is broken. I don't really know what it is, but the most recent Internet Archive date is: https://web.archive.org/web/20140211051254/http://www.splasher.com.ar/ I suppose you could update with that (although you can't download the actual Splasher), or remove it entirely, or link an equivalent instead? Felderburg 21:28, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

According to Leandro, the domain has expired and there are no plans to resurrect it for the near future. So I've removed the link. Blondeshell Sig.png talk / contribs 00:50, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
Neato. And now I know where to make comments on the sidebar! Felderburg 15:17, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
