Missing Sources

Where did this information come from?

???: The Malta Knights separate from the Malta Templars.(17)

Pictures

The pictures are a nice touch. They help break up the huge amount of text. Great job on the whole thing. --GreyDog 14:20, 17 October 2007 (EDT)

The Regulators

Paragon City, 1972: Back Alley Brawler founds the Regulators. (64)
Paragon City, 28 Febrary 1979: Back Alley Brawler forms the Regulators.

Huh. The second entry is from the 4-Year calendar, the first entry is from the Scholar Badge. Anyone want to weigh in on which is "more official"? --K26dp 22:04, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Checking the official Paragon City Backstory:
Led by the flamboyant and ever-popular Michael White (AKA the Back Alley Brawler), the Regulators had been doing their best to fight street crime in Paragon City since the early seventies.
I'd say that would fit more with 1972 than 1979. --Eabrace 22:18, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
Agreed; besides, it seems like we should go with the in-game date anyways. I'm going to eliminate the 1979 entry. --K26dp 22:34, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Speaking of the Regulators... The timeline says Michael White (BAB) was born in 1960. The Regulators were formed in the seventies. Going by the two dates ref'd above, he was either 12 or 19 when he founded it, and I would state with 99% certainty that Paragon City would not allow a 12 year old to found a hero squad. Perhaps we should take a second look at the dates again (shines the Manticore symbol) ~ User:Aggelakis/Sig1 06:37, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Good point... then again, he's a pretty big dude, and the "son of a gang enforcer." It's possible he was big and tough enough that people assumed he was old enough?? Felderburg 16:36, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Overhauling

I've started overhauling the page. If you hate something I've done, please comment so discussion can ensue. Rationale for a few of the changes I made:

  • I removed a lot of the images. I like having images, but they were all over the place and made the text difficult to read. Many of the images also weren't directly relevant to the history they were near. I'm planning to later go back and rework the images, adding more back in and keeping them more concretely relevant to the history they are near. I'm also planning to keep them exclusively on the right so that the flow of the text isn't interrupted.
  • I put years as headings, removed the bold face, and converted things to bullets. This removes a lot of wiki markup from the article, making the article shorter (bytewise) and easier to visually parse. The year-based headings make it easier to edit small sections, and they also help ensure that things stay well ordered. (I noticed a number of items out of sequence as I was reformatting.)

I'm planning to do a lot of work on this yet, as I have time. Among other things, I'd like to:

  • Tame the references so that they're easier to manage and easier to follow.
  • Rework images, as mentioned above.
  • Proofread and copyedit the text. Perhaps trim parts down a bit. Some spots go into a bit more depth than is necessary, even though the content is covered elsewhere.
  • Try to better link the history points to articles that go into greater depth on them. (This might also help thin out the references, since some of those references can be replaced by normal wikilinking.) I'm not sure how well this'll work though.
  • Pin down some more of those unknown dates.
  • Figure out a better way to present history items that have a non-specific date or that cover a time period.

If anyone has any suggestions on anything, please share! -- Sekoia 05:25, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Overhauling 2: Back to the Overhauling

Ok, so I spent about a week getting all the sources turned into wiki-style references. It went mostly smoothly, but I'm sure there were a few glitches that I'll hopefully catch as I go through copy editing. Goals for copy editing:

1: Make sure every event has a reference. Official pages are best, other wiki pages are good, and everything else should be improved if possible.

2: Remove prepended locations where possible. If something states it takes place in Steel Canyon, there's no need to put "Paragon City" before it. It'll make the page flow a lot better.

3: Consistency of events with ranges or only general dates ("In the 17th century", etc.) Changing some headings to show date ranges instead of a single year.

4: Factual accuracy of both in-game and real events. (The Civil War didn't end in 1864.)

If you have any issues, let me know. If you have more sources, feel free to pop them in.

Future Events

Should future events be included? Things like the Coming Storm, visions of various victories you have, the death of all Kheldians. Just curious. It would make sense to have them in their own section, a "possible future events" type thing - but then again, if this is meant to be a timeline only of events up 'til now, it wouldn't make sense to have them at all. Top Cow 1 Reference

I added it since it was needed for the timing of the Power Crash. However, I seem to have done it wrong, even though I copied the formatting from the other Top Cow reference that works properly. Someone should fix that, since I have no idea why it isn't working. Felderburg 00:34, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

I think I fixed it. Let me know if that's not what you were going for. --Eabrace Healthbar notify phone.png 13:59, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
That'll work. Although I notice that all the references have the little "a, b, c," etc.... to link to what they are a reference for - the thing is, the last letter doesn't seem to go anywhere. Felderburg 14:43, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
Because of the way the references are set up, there's an extra entry for each reference that is the reference entry itself. So, the last latter is a link to the reference itself, which is why it doesn't go anywhere. Normally this would be avoided by having inline references, but on a page this big, it's easier to have them all at the bottom for editing purposes. SpaceNut 17:20, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
I thought that might be the case. I'll leave formatting that sort of thing to experts. Felderburg 00:45, 31 July 2011 (UTC)
That's not entirely true. Something is amiss here. I just did a temporary test case here that shows it's not supposed to have the extra links that don't go anywhere when you do the references this way. I suspect something is amiss with the template it's using. -- Sekoia 23:19, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

References

As mission articles change namespace from template into missionspace... some of the references on this page a re breaking. I am unsure how to fix them, exactly. Will they sort themselves eventually like templates do when they refuse to update sometimes and the inner workings of the Wiki just need to catch up? Or does something actually need to be fixed. User:Thirty7/Sig 08:03, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

It actually needs to be fixed. If you edit the References section, you'll see that all the references are listed there, so it's just a matter of finding the right one in the list. -- Sekoia 09:30, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Page Name

Shouldn't this page be called In-Game Timeline? User:Thirty7/Sig 08:03, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Come to mention it, "In-Game" seems silly to me. Most of the events covered here predate what you could call "in game". This is actually a timeline for the game's canon, so I renamed the article as such. And took care of the case issue as well. Hopefully nobody objects to that name. -- Sekoia 08:52, 19 June 2012 (UTC)
I certainly don't. Better than what I suggested. Smilies smile.gif User:Thirty7/Sig 04:15, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
